This guide explains how to measure and how to choose. The exact sizes, finishes, shapes and styles available for each item are always listed on its product page, and those listings are the ones to rely on when you order.</p>\n<section class=\"policy-summary\">\n<h2>Choosing in one glance</h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Wrapping paper:</strong> measure your largest box first; choose the longer roll for families or big boxes.</li>\n<li><strong>Ornaments:</strong> pick the shape for your wording; longer names suit wider shapes.</li>\n<li><strong>Stockings:</strong> choose by style and by who it is for; pets and stocking stuffers suit smaller options where offered.</li>\n<li><strong>Not sure?</strong> Email <a href=\"mailto:support@merrywrap.shop\">support@merrywrap.shop</a> with the product and your wording.</li>\n<li><strong>Wrong choice?</strong> Exchange within 60 days of delivery, with free return postage.</li>\n</ul>\n</section>\n<h2>Wrapping paper: how much do you need?</h2>\n<p>A roll is described by its width (how tall the paper is when unrolled) and its length (how far it unrolls). Both matter: the width must be enough to cover the ends of a box, and the length decides how many boxes a roll can wrap. Roll sizes for each design are listed on the product page.</p>\n<h3>Measuring a box</h3>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Distance around the box.</strong> Wrap a tape measure, or a piece of string you then measure, all the way around the box, over the top, the long sides and the bottom. Add about 2 inches (5 cm) for the overlap where the paper is taped. This is how much roll length one box uses.</li>\n<li><strong>Paper needed for the ends.</strong> Measure the length of the box and add the height of the box once (half the height at each end is folded in). This is how much of the roll&#8217;s width the box needs.</li>\n<li><strong>Compare with the roll.</strong> If the second measurement is wider than the roll, turn the box so the paper runs the other way, or choose a design with a wider roll.</li>\n</ol>\n<table class=\"policy-table\">\n<caption>Worked example: wrapping a shoebox-sized gift</caption>\n<thead>\n<tr>\n<th scope=\"col\">Step</th>\n<th scope=\"col\">Box measurement</th>\n<th scope=\"col\">Paper needed</th>\n</tr>\n</thead>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>Box size</td>\n<td>13 in long, 8 in wide, 5 in high</td>\n<td>Not applicable</td>\n</tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Around the box</td>\n<td>8 + 5 + 8 + 5 = 26 in, plus 2 in overlap</td>\n<td>28 in of roll length</td>\n</tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Across the box, with ends</td>\n<td>13 in + 5 in</td>\n<td>18 in of roll width</td>\n</tr>\n</tbody>\n</table>\n<p>In this example, each shoebox uses a little over two feet of roll length. Add up the boxes on your list in the same way, then add about a fifth extra for cutting mistakes, irregular shapes and a gift or two you forgot. That total tells you which roll length to pick, or whether two rolls are a better plan.</p>\n<h3>Rules of thumb</h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>One person&#8217;s pile of small gifts:</strong> a shorter roll is usually enough.</li>\n<li><strong>A family with several children:</strong> choose a longer roll, or one roll per child so every child&#8217;s name is on their own presents.</li>\n<li><strong>Large or awkward gifts:</strong> measure them first; a large box can use more paper than several small ones.</li>\n<li><strong>Soft or round gifts:</strong> put them in a box or a gift bag first; paper wraps cleanly around flat sides.</li>\n</ul>\n<h3>Finish</h3>\n<p>Where a design is offered in more than one finish, matte paper has a soft, flat look and hides fingerprints, while a satin finish has a gentle sheen that catches the tree lights. Both fold and tape in the same way. The finishes available are listed on each product page.</p>\n<h2>Ornaments: choosing a shape</h2>\n<p>Ornament shapes, such as round, star, heart or bell, are listed on each product page. The best shape depends mostly on your wording.</p>\n<table class=\"policy-table\">\n<caption>Matching wording to ornament shapes</caption>\n<thead>\n<tr>\n<th scope=\"col\">Your wording</th>\n<th scope=\"col\">Good choice</th>\n<th scope=\"col\">Why</th>\n</tr>\n</thead>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>One short name and a year (&#8220;Ava 2026&#8221;)</td>\n<td>Any shape</td>\n<td>Short wording fits every layout comfortably</td>\n</tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Two names and a year (&#8220;Sam &amp; Jordan 2026&#8221;)</td>\n<td>Heart or round</td>\n<td>Wider centres give two names room to breathe</td>\n</tr>\n<tr>\n<td>A long family name (&#8220;The Montgomery-Clarkes&#8221;)</td>\n<td>Round</td>\n<td>The widest even space for a long line</td>\n</tr>\n<tr>\n<td>A pet&#8217;s name (&#8220;Biscuit&#8221;)</td>\n<td>Bell, star or round</td>\n<td>A playful shape for a short name</td>\n</tr>\n<tr>\n<td>A first-Christmas line (&#8220;Baby&#8217;s First Christmas, Leo 2026&#8221;)</td>\n<td>Round</td>\n<td>Room for a phrase plus a name and year</td>\n</tr>\n</tbody>\n</table>\n<p>If your wording is too long for the layout, we pause the order and email you rather than shrinking the text until it is hard to read. Short wording almost always looks best on a tree, read from a step away.</p>\n<h2>Stockings: choosing a style</h2>\n<p>Stocking styles, such as plush cuff, knit-look and burlap-look, and any size options, are listed on each product page.</p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Plush cuff:</strong> a soft, classic look with the name on a bright cuff; a favourite for children.</li>\n<li><strong>Knit-look:</strong> a cosy, sweater-like style that suits a traditional or Nordic-style mantel.</li>\n<li><strong>Burlap-look:</strong> a rustic, natural texture that pairs well with kraft paper and pine.</li>\n</ul>\n<p>For a family set, choose one style for everyone so the row looks matched, or mix styles deliberately, for example a different style for the pets. Before you order, count your mantel hooks or stocking holders and check they can hold the weight of a full stocking.</p>\n<h2>No tape measure? Measure with what you have</h2>\n<p>You do not need special tools to estimate paper. A piece of string or ribbon works well: wrap it around the box, mark where it meets, then lay it along a ruler or a sheet of standard letter paper, which is 11 inches (about 28 cm) on its long side. A dollar bill is just over 6 inches long, and an A4 sheet is about 30 cm on its long side, if you are in Australia or New Zealand. Even a rough measurement is far better than guessing, because it stops you ordering a roll that is far too short for a big family.</p>\n<h2>Wrapping tips that save paper</h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Measure before you cut.</strong> Roll the box across the paper once to see how much you need, then cut with a couple of inches to spare, not a foot.</li>\n<li><strong>Turn the box.</strong> If the paper is not wide enough to cover the ends one way, turning the box often solves it.</li>\n<li><strong>Wrap the biggest gifts first.</strong> Offcuts left over from large boxes are perfect for small ones.</li>\n<li><strong>Keep the name visible.</strong> On personalised paper, position the box so at least one full repeat of the name sits on the top.</li>\n<li><strong>Use a box for soft gifts.</strong> Clothing and plush toys wrap more neatly, and with less paper, once boxed.</li>\n<li><strong>Store leftovers rolled.</strong> A rubber band or a strip of tape around the roll keeps it from unwinding until next year.</li>\n</ul>\n<h2>Wrapping awkward shapes</h2>\n<p>Bottles, balls, cylinders and very flat gifts use more paper than their size suggests. For a cylinder, measure around it and add an overlap, then add the diameter to its length so you can pleat the ends. For a very flat gift such as a book or a picture frame, the end flaps are short, so the width you need is close to the length of the item plus a little. Round items like balls are easiest in a box or a gift bag, with a strip of personalised paper wrapped around the outside as a band.</p>\n<h2>Choosing by who the gift is for</h2>\n<table class=\"policy-table\">\n<caption>Suggested choices by recipient</caption>\n<thead>\n<tr>\n<th scope=\"col\">Recipient</th>\n<th scope=\"col\">Paper</th>\n<th scope=\"col\">Ornament</th>\n<th scope=\"col\">Stocking</th>\n</tr>\n</thead>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>Young child</td>\n<td>A roll with their own name, sized for their pile of gifts</td>\n<td>Round or star with name and year</td>\n<td>Plush cuff in a bright colour</td>\n</tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Teenager</td>\n<td>A simple pattern with a short name</td>\n<td>Star with first name</td>\n<td>Knit-look</td>\n</tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Couple</td>\n<td>Both names repeated</td>\n<td>Heart with two names and the year</td>\n<td>A matching pair</td>\n</tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Grandparents</td>\n<td>Family-name paper</td>\n<td>Round with family name and year</td>\n<td>Burlap-look or knit-look</td>\n</tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Pet</td>\n<td>A short roll for treats and toys</td>\n<td>Bell with the pet&#8217;s name</td>\n<td>A smaller or contrasting style</td>\n</tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Whole family</td>\n<td>A longer roll with the family name</td>\n<td>Round with every name</td>\n<td>One style for everyone</td>\n</tr>\n</tbody>\n</table>\n<h2>A second worked example: the family pile</h2>\n<p>Suppose you are wrapping for a family of four: two children with five gifts each, and two adults with three gifts each. Most of the gifts are shoebox-sized, as in the first example, and use a little over two feet of roll length each. A few are larger, such as a board game, which can use closer to three feet.</p>\n<table class=\"policy-table\">\n<caption>Estimating paper for a family of four</caption>\n<thead>\n<tr>\n<th scope=\"col\">Who</th>\n<th scope=\"col\">Gifts</th>\n<th scope=\"col\">Rough roll length</th>\n</tr>\n</thead>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>Child 1</td>\n<td>5 gifts, mostly shoebox-sized</td>\n<td>About 12 ft</td>\n</tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Child 2</td>\n<td>5 gifts, one larger</td>\n<td>About 13 ft</td>\n</tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Adults</td>\n<td>6 gifts in total</td>\n<td>About 14 ft</td>\n</tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Margin for mistakes and extras</td>\n<td>About one fifth more</td>\n<td>About 8 ft</td>\n</tr>\n</tbody>\n</table>\n<p>That is a total of roughly 47 feet. If each child should have their own name on their own presents, plan one roll per child plus a family-name roll for the adults, choosing roll lengths from the product page that cover each figure. These numbers are only an illustration of the method; your own boxes will give your own totals.</p>\n<h2>Ordering names for several items</h2>\n<p>When you order several rolls, ornaments or stockings, the size or style you pick for each item and the name for each item need to line up. Add the items to your cart in a sensible order, for example oldest child first, then write the order notes in the same order with a number on each line: &#8220;Stocking 1: Liam&#8221;, &#8220;Stocking 2: Noah&#8221;, &#8220;Stocking 3: Mia&#8221;. If items differ in size or style, mention it on the line too, so there is never any doubt which name goes on which piece. A quick read of the list against your cart before you pay takes less than a minute and prevents most mix-ups.</p>\n<h2>Gift sets</h2>\n<p>Gift sets combine pieces chosen to go together, and each set&#8217;s product page lists exactly what is included and in which sizes. If a set includes paper, use the wrapping paper steps above to check that the roll suits the gifts you plan to wrap with it.</p>\n<h2>If you are between two choices</h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Paper:</strong> choose the longer roll. Extra paper keeps until next year if stored rolled and dry; running out on Christmas Eve does not.</li>\n<li><strong>Ornament:</strong> choose the shape with the widest centre for your longest line.</li>\n<li><strong>Stocking:</strong> choose the style that matches the stockings you already hang.</li>\n<li><strong>Still unsure:</strong> email us with the product link and your wording; we reply within 24 hours on business days.</li>\n</ul>\n<h2>Exchanges if the size or style is wrong</h2>\n<p>If a roll turns out too short, a shape does not suit your wording, or a stocking style does not match your mantel, you can exchange it within 60 days of delivery. Return postage is free, and change-of-mind exchanges should come back unused. Because every piece is personalised, the new item is prepared after we hear from you and follows our usual 1–3 business days of preparation and 7–14 business days in transit.
